Jaw In A Day
A coordinated, single-surgery approach that delivers a fixed, implant-supported smile the same day as one's jaw reconstruction — you arrive for surgery, and you leave with teeth.
Most patients undergoing jaw reconstruction are told the same thing: surgery first, then months of healing, then implants — with the possiblity of teeth. The traditional path to a functional smile after jaw surgery could take two to five years, and many patients never completed it at all.
Jaw-in-a-Day changes that. Using virtual surgical planning, precision-fabricated guides, and a custom prosthesis designed before you enter the operating room, our team delivers a fixed, implant-supported temporary smile on the same day as your reconstruction. It is not experimental. It is not new. It is a proven, coordinated approach — and for the right patient, it means leaving the operating room with a smile in place.
Jaw-in-a-Day
One Surgery. Complete Rehabilitation
Jaw-in-A-Day — known in the literature as osseous free flap reconstruction with immediate implant placement and immediate loading — is a single-stage surgical procedure that combines jaw reconstruction using a vascularized bone free flap, dental implant placement into the reconstructed bone, and delivery of a fixed provisonal prosthesis — all in one coordinated visit.
It is a stable, fixed prosthesis — permanently anchored, precisely designed, and built to restore speech, nutrition, confidence, and sense of self from day one.
Before Jaw-in-a-Day, the median time to dental rehabilitation after jaw reconstruction was 843 days. With this protocol, that timeline compreses to a median day of 150 days — and many patients begin wearing a fixed temporary prosthesis the same day as surgery.
Patient Selection
Who Is A Candidate?
Jaw-in-a-Day is appropriate for a specific patient population — those who require jaw reconstruction, not simply tooth replacement. Candidacy depends on multiple clinical factors and is determined through thorough evaluation and imaging.
Conditions we treat:
- Oral or jaw cancer requiring surgical resection
- Benign jaw tumors
- Osteonecrosis of the jaw (medication-related or radiation-related)
- Severe trauma or injury resulting in jaw loss
- Failed previous jaw reconstruction
What makes a strong candidate:
- Medically appropriate for a single coordinated surgery
- Adequate bone for reconstruction — typically a fibula free flap
- Preference for a fixed, permanent solution over removable prosthetics
- Commitment to follow-up care through to the final restoration
A thorough evaluation is required before any recommendation is made. Not every patient is a candidate. Our team will be review your case and consult your surgeon prior to any decision. For complex cases, we schedule a dedicated follow-up visit to coordinate the next steps.
Our Approach
The Jaw-in-a-Day Workflow
This is not a procedure that can be improvised. Every Jaw-in-a-Day case at TADS is built on coordinated planning between our prosthodontic and surgical teams. This team-based approach is supported by digital planning, precision imaging, and in-house laboratory work.
1. Comprehensive Evaluation & Diagnostics
The journey begins with a detailed clinical evaluated. CBCT imaging, intraoral scanning, and smile analysis. We assess your dentition, anatomy, prosthetic goals to determine candidacy and plan implant placement with precision.
2. Digital Treatment Planning
Using advanced software, our prosthodontists and your surgeon collaborate to plan ideal tooth position, implant placement, free flap design, and surgical guide fabrication — all before surgery begins. Your provisional prosthesis is designed and fabricated during this phase, ready before your surgery date.
3. Pre-Surgical Coordination
A dedicated visit or phone call to review all surgical and prosthetic details, confirm the plan, address patient questions, and ensure every team member — surgical and prosthetic — is aligned before the procedure date.
4. Surgery Day: Reconstruction, Implants & Provisional Prosthesis
On the day of your procedure, remaining teeth are extracted (if needed), implants are placed, and your provisional fixed prosthesis is seated — all in a single appointment. You leave with teeth.
In the vast majority of cases, a fixed provisional is placed on surgery day. Intraoperative factors may occasionally require us to modify the plan. We will always communicate clearly what occurred and what your path forward looks like.
5. Healing, Integration & Prosthetic Refinement
Over 3–6 months, the reconstructed bone and implants integrate together. During this time, we monitor healing, shape soft tissue contours, and refine your provisional prosthesis as healing progresses — optimizing fit, function, and esthetics before your final restoration is made.
6. Final Prosthesis Delivery & Long Term Follow-Up
Once integration is confirmed, your final, permanent prosthesis is fabricated and delivered. We maintain a structured follow-up protocol to monitor implant health, prosthesis function, and hygiene. Your long-term outcome depends on this ongoing relationship.
The Jaw-in-a-Day workflow requires close coordination between TADS and your reconstructive surgical team. If you are a current patient of an ENT, head and neck surgeon, or oral and maxillofacial surgeon — we welcome the opportunity to be introduced to your team and begin planning together.
A Clearly Defined Team
Who Does What — and Why It Matters
Jaw-in-a-Day requires two expert teams working in coordinated sequence. Understanding the distinct roles helps patients and referring clinicians feel confident in the process from the first consultation through final delivery.
Reconstrucive Surgical Team
What happens on the surgical side:
- Tumor resection or jaw removal
- Free flap harvest — typically fibula from the lower leg
- Microvascular anastomosis and bony fixation
- Flap monitoring and post-surgical medical management
- Coordination with oncology and radiation oncology as needed
Tampa Advanced Dental Solutions
What our team handles:
- Full prosthetic evaluation and virtual surgical planning
- Prosthesis design oversight from planning through delivery
- Intraoperative implant placement and abutment seating
- Delivery of fixed provisional prosthesis on surgery day
- Prosthetic refinement throughout the healing phase
- Final restoration fabrication and delivery
- Long-term hygiene protocol and maintenance coordination — whether with our team or in partnership with your local dentist, with annual follow-up at TADS.
TADS does not perform the reconstruction. Our role is exclusively prosthetic and implant-focused — delivered in close collaboration with your surgeon's team in the operating room.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Patients & Families Ask Us
Does Tampa Advanced Dental Solutions perform the jaw surgery?
No. Your surgeon performs the resection and free flap reconstruction. Our prosthodontic team works alongside them in the operating room, handling implant placement and all prosthetic components. The two teams operate in coordinated sequence, not interchangeably.
Will I have teeth when I leave surgery?
In the vast majority of cases, yes — a fixed temporary prosthesis is delivered on surgery day. In rare cases, intraoperative factors may require us to modify the plan. If that happens, we will explain exactly what occurred and outline a clear path forward. You will never leave without answers.
What if I have already had radiation treatment?
Research consistently shows that implants placed in previously irradiated bone carry significantly higher failure rates and risk of osteoradionecrosis. Placing implants before radiation begins — as done in the Jaw-in-a-Day protocol — significantly improves long-term implant survival. If you have already undergone radiation, your candidacy requires careful individual evaluation. Please speak with us before assuming treatment is not possible.
Will Jaw-in-a-Day delay my radiation therapy?
Current evidence consistently shows no significant difference in time to radiation initiation between patients who receive immediate implants and those who do not. Jaw-in-a-Day does not delay adjuvant treatment.
How long is recovery after surgery?
Recovery varies. Most patients spend several days in the hospital following surgery with full integration of the implants and reconstructed bone taking approximately 3–6 months. Throughout this time you will have your provisional prosthesis in place and will be seen regularly by both your surgical team and ours.
How long until I receive my final teeth?
The timeline to your final prosthesis varies. For patients who do not require additional treatment after surgery, the process typically takes approximately 3–6 months once osseointegration is confirmed and surgeon clearance is received. For patients undergoing radiation or other adjuvant therapy, the timeline may be longer — and we coordinate closely with your medical team before advancing your prosthetic care. Throughout the entire process you will have your provisional prosthesis in place.
